Educated Russian taste traditionally favored the French eighteenth-century court styles of Louis XV and XVI or the early nineteenth-century First Empire (1804–1814) style established by Emperor Napoléon I of France. The First Empire mode observed in the sugar basin enjoyed a particular resonance with patrician Russian taste since it recalled the glorious defeat of Napoléon’s Grande Armée by Russian troops.
The silver produced by the House of Fabergé was always of substantial weight, beautifully designed and finished.
